Review: The Grim Company

The Grim Company The Grim Company by Luke Scull
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Not terrible, but not great. Some neat large-scale world ideas, but nothing has any believable depth to it. The characters are all pixellated caricatures of themselves, and the dialogue is horribly stilted; try and read any of it out loud and you'll end up giggling in all the wrong bits. I was amused by the young lad who desperately wants to Be A Hero And Save the World, but he's all comic relief and no substance so far. For all that, I might have stuck with it to the end just to see how those interesting ideas played out, but it's the first book of 3, and I don't think I'm willing to wait that long.

Review: Ninefox Gambit

Ninefox Gambit Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Oh wow. I have no idea what half of that meant, but it was brilliantly fun to read.

Lee paints a truly alien picture of the far future. Much of it makes no sense, and he doesn't waste time explaining all the details. But the things that truly matter need no explanation, and the rest is just amazing unique world-building. Loved this book; diving straight in to the second one.
